Cinema verite documentarian Robert Drew dies at 90

Filmmaker Robert Drew, a pioneer of the modern documentary who in "Primary" and other movies mastered the intimate, spontaneous style known as cinema verite and schooled a generation of influential directors that included D.A. Pennebaker and Albert Maysles, has died at age 90. His son Thatcher Drew confirmed he died Wednesday at his home in Sharon, Connecticut. Hearing set for Hollywood sex abuse lawyer change

HONOLULU (AP) -- A court hearing in Honolulu has been scheduled for lawyers who want out of a case accusing `X-Men' director Bryan Singer of sex abuse. The Aug. 6 hearing will discuss a request by attorneys Jeff Herman and Mark Gallagher to withdraw as counsel for Michael Egan III. They say they no longer talk to Egan except through a new lawyer. Egan, 31, accuses Singer in a lawsuit of sexually abusing him during trips to Hawaii when he was 17 in 1999. Singer has denied the allegations. Read more [...]

Veteran TV impresario Robert Halmi Sr. dies at 90

NEW YORK (AP) -- Prolific TV producer Robert Halmi, Sr., has died. Halmi died Wednesday in his New York City home at 90, said spokesman Russ Patrick. The Hungarian-born Halmi found success as a magazine photographer after arriving in America in 1951, shooting pictures for such publications as Life and Sports Illustrated. But in a mid-career switch in the mid-1960s, he turned to moving pictures. During the next half-century he produced more than 200 programs and miniseries for television. Read more [...]

Microsoft spreads Cortana abroad in Windows Phone

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Microsoft is spreading its Cortana digital assistant abroad, starting with China and the U.K. The company's corporate vice president of operating systems, Joe Belfiore, said Wednesday in Beijing that Chinese and British users of Windows Phones will get the voice-recognizing app in an update to Windows Phone 8.1 that will begin rolling out to developers next week and to users in the coming months. Samsung profit falls as smartphone sales slow

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- Samsung Electronics Co. reported a bigger-than-expected fall in second quarter profit on Thursday and said it was uncertain if earnings from its handset business would improve in the current quarter. Crop circle in Germany attracts many visitors

BERLIN (AP) -- Thousands of people are trekking to a Bavarian farmer's field to check out a mysterious set of crop circles. The ornate design was discovered by a balloonist last week and news of the find quickly spread online. BOISE, Idaho (AP) -- A woman who got a speeding ticket while on a recent vacation to Idaho wrote a note to the Idaho State Police thanking the trooper for the kindness he showed her grandchildren during the stop. Ax crashes through car windshield on highway

TOPSFIELD, Mass. (AP) -- It was a scary moment on a highway north of Boston when an ax smashed through the windshield of a car. Massachusetts State Police say the ax bounced out of a landscaper's dump truck at about 11 a.m. Wednesday on southbound Interstate 95 in Topsfield.
